Becoming One With the Wild : My Story
The great outdoors is where all the wonders of the world transpires. I am fortunate to live somewhere so beautiful in its natural beauty right outside my window. From my earliest memories, whether that be with my family or with a day camp, I found myself exploring the great outdoors. One day, we’d be at the beach on a bright, sunny day; another day, we’d be in the mountains surrounded by the tallest trees. Up until the pandemic, I would spend my free time exploring new places. One of my favourite activities is to go hiking. Hiking to me is a breath of fresh air, literally. It is when I feel the most connected to my surroundings, with all the plants and especially the animals. I’ve always wondered, what exactly did I love so much about the natural world? Today, I believe the answer to that question is that I love life. All the plants from the trees to the mushrooms and all the animals from the eagles flying overhead to the small rollie pollies on the ground, each living being is what I find so incredibly fascinating. The natural world is now a huge part of my life, and it constantly beguiles me. Overall, nature is what makes me appreciative of life itself and inspires how I live my life.

The fact that I live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth is a huge reason as to why my life is so heavily influenced. When being surrounded by this environment, I feel deeply connected with each part; it makes me feel rooted in the present in my natural state. The idea that animals are the only creatures that we share the planet with makes me feel so invested on how our life balances out together. It is the sole reason for our existence, everything we own and have is all thanks to the natural world. When I first really processed this information, I wanted to know more about the balance of the world and how life is sustained on this goldilocks planet. Being one with the wild made me reflect on my life and how I interact with the environment.
Humans act through the part of the brain where we feel emotions, for instance, when we feel fear we act on it with the flight or fight response. In addition to my hiking experiences, I enjoy watching nature documentaries in my free time, hence the post on Planet Earth. As I learn about how each being on Earth interacts with one another, I realise the impact of one small being. One simple act can drastically change the equilibrium of the Earth. Consequently, I learned about the small deeds I make throughout my day and how it changes each path. By reflecting on my actions, I know I can make a difference on our planet which is why I work to make sure that my carbon footprint is reduced.
This realisation changed my life. I see the way the world works in an entirely new light and it fills me with awe and inspiration. This is our home. This is where I belong. Outside in the wild, where each being is fighting to breathe in the air of life. It feeds all my senses and makes me feel like I truly belong. If you were to look at me, it probably wouldn’t be expected that the outdoors is one of my favourite things. Although not many people know this part of me, it is a connection solely between the environment and myself.
